Recognizing Signs of Substance Abuse:
  • Change in peers or social groups
  • Loss of interest in other activities
  • Grades dropping
  • Acting out or defiance
  • Intoxication from a substance
  • Finding drug or alcohol paraphernalia

Signs of Substance Dependence
  • Tries to cut down or stop use but can't
  • Builds a tolerance, needing more of the drug or alcohol to get full effect
  • Becomes irritable, uncomfortable, or anxious when not using
  • Goes through withdrawal symptoms
  • Continues to use despite consequences
Adolescents may turn to drugs and alcohol for a variety of reasons.
For some, substance use begins as a way to fit in with a social group or as a way to alleviate stress and anxiety. Initially, many teens start using substances out of curiosity or the desire to have fun. Unfortunately, when substance use increases or becomes a coping mechanism for dealing with life’s challenges, the consequences can be harmful and far-reaching.
At the Bay Area Center for Adolescents, we specialize in helping teens and their families navigate the challenges of substance use.
Whether your teen is just experimenting or struggling with addiction, our experienced therapists are here to help. We understand the complexities of substance use and its impact on the whole family.
Our therapists use evidence-based approaches such as:
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Motivational Interviewing (MI)
  • Brief Strategic Family Therapy (BSFT)
  • Multidimensional Family Therapy (MDFT)
These proven therapies are highly effective in treating adolescent substance use and fostering lasting change.
Additionally, we have an educational consultant on staff who can guide families in selecting the appropriate level of care, whether that’s outpatient therapy or inpatient rehabilitation. We work closely with families every step of the way, ensuring that treatment is tailored to meet their specific needs.
At the Bay Area Center for Adolescents, we’re committed to supporting your family through this process and helping your teen move toward a healthier future.
