Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder can cause problems for both adolescents and their families. Most adolescents with ADHD want to achieve and know what they need to do, but have a hard time putting it into action when the time comes. Teens with ADHD tend to get in trouble much more at home, at school, and in the community due to difficulty controlling their impulses, risk taking, frustration around school and homework, difficulty being focused, and many become defiant at home and/or suffer depression. Substance abuse is also common with teens with ADHD as a way to both treat the ADHD themselves and also treat the feelings of low self-esteem and failure that can come with getting in trouble more often. Lastly, many adolescents can have social problems due to their ADHD, causing them further struggles.
Fortunately, at the Bay Area Center for Adolescents, we understand how to help adolescents and their families overcome the effects of ADHD. Although ADHD is a lifelong problem, it does not have to control one's life. We work with adolescents and their families to understand what ADHD, how it affects them and how to overcome it. The adolescent will learn ways to organize themselves, build coping skills to deal with the symptoms, and learn how to protect their sense of self so that they can succeed. We work with parents to help them develop ways to support their child in a way that does not exhaust them or make them feel over-involved, but at the same time provides enough of the structure to help their child succeed. We can also form a team of those who might be needed, such as a therapist for therapy, a psychiatrist for medication, and/or an educational therapist. We also provide in-depth psychological assessments to document the ADHD for academic accommodations and to develop a treatment plan.
