Since the pandemic, mental health issues have been on the rise–especially among teens. Emerging research on mind-body interventions suggests they hold significant potential in addressing this growing crisis. Despite their promise, these approaches remain underutilized in mainstream psychotherapy and are not well understood by the general public. Traditional therapy methods often focus exclusively on psychological factors, overlooking the critical role of physical health. Yet the mind and body are deeply interconnected, and addressing both in tandem may be key to more effective, holistic mental health care.

What Are Mind-Body Interventions?
Mind-body interventions are practices that bridge the gap between physical and mental health. These exercises including practices like yoga, mindfulness, dance, aerobic exercise, and creative activities engage the body and mind as a single, unified system.

Mind-body interventions engage the nervous system in healthy ways, helping to regulate emotions, reduce stress, and even improve interpersonal skills. Unlike many mental interventions, these practices can be utilized as a proactive rather than reactive approach to mental health. They don’t just treat illness—they promote wellness.

A More Accessible Path to Care
For many, traditional mental health services may be out of reach due to cost, stigma, or lack of availability. Mind-body interventions offer a more affordable, accessible, and adaptable form of support. Whether practiced at home, in a school mindfulness program, or through a community-based dance or fitness classes, mind-body interventions can be woven into everyday life in meaningful, sustainable ways.

As we face a growing mental health crisis among young people, integrating movement, mindfulness, and creativity into care could be a powerful step forward. It’s time to reimagine how we support teen mental health: by embracing the full connection between body and mind.
